Water and Fire have mystified artistic cultures throughout history—symbolizing forces of creation and destruction. In many ways, these two opposed elements have shaped our subjective understanding(s) of who we are, where we are, and how we are. Looking anywhere from the mythological heist of Prometheus and the biblical story of the Noachian Flood, to the more contemporary Rhenish siren, Lorelei, and Billy Joel’s denial of arson in the 1980’s, we see the fascination that these two elemental wonders inspire in our collective imagination. This program explores this elemental dichotomy, considering how each force shapes our inner, creative worlds.

The Toccata, which translates to “touched” in Italian, and the Sonata, which translates to “sounded” or “played” in Italian, are two foundational genres of instrumental music from which a rich tradition of classical piano literature has been born. This program, featuring works from numerous stylistic traditions between the 17th and 20th centuries, explores these two genres and their many intersections. With great sincerity and a keen eye for drama, each of these composers connect the physicality of music-making with the emotional vitality of sound, questioning what it means to hear, touch, and play through music.

Perhaps the greatest characteristic of the piano is its ability to become anything but itself. Throughout much of the western classical tradition, the piano has often served as the workbench of toiling composers. As it only requires one individual to cover all the bases—bass, melody, and those meandering inner voices—the piano often operates as a sort of initial access point to undiscovered sounds, worlds, and emotions. This program explores the orchestral color, and inspiration that can be found in this singular instrument, seeking out the infinite, imagined worlds that can only be found in music.

The central idea behind this program is the Hommage—a tribute paid to another individual, one that attempts to capture some aspect of their heart, mind, or spirit. It is no secret that music embodies core expressions of who we are as people, and, as is similarly obvious, who we are as people is nurtured in many ways by the people who surround us. With this in mind, it has become truly fascinating to me the way in which we are able to share, absorb, and respond to the people around us through music. Each piece in this program captures some essence of an individual who was (or is) personally important to the composer in some fashion.
For more information about this program, please check out the Hommage tab on the Projects page (coming soon!) of this website! I am independently producing this program as my debut album, expected to be completed in the fall of 2027. If you would like to contribute and become a part of this project, please do not hesitate to reach out!
